This province is the most mountainous province of all. It is locally known as Intara y’Amajyaruguru. It has 5 districts namely; Musanze its capital, Gakenke, Gicumbi, Burera, and Rulindo. It is also whereby the last of the first gorillas live freely in the wild. The Twa which is the smallest tribe in Rwanda inhabits the Northern Province because they live in forested areas.
This province is part of the Northwest Irish potato scheme, therefore, making Irish potatoes one of its cash crops. Other cash crops are coffee, pyrethrum, bananas, sorghum, wheat, tea and beans. Due to this, Musanze district is known as the country’s granary.
