The district is more rural than urban with Gicumbi town being the only urban place. Many households battle with poverty and as the years go by, the population increases. However, basic amenities like safe drinking water and sanitation are an ongoing problem.
The launch of Girinka which is the one cow per family programme has helped the people in this district to get into profitable business by producing milk which also improves nutrition in these households.
The district has a few nightclubs that sell local beer and banana beer.

Byumba is the hub of commercial sex in the district. The sex workers operate independently. They operate in bars, their homes, the bushes or houses that are rented by their clients. The sex workers who operate like this are called low-class workers while high-class workers are mostly widows due to the genocide and operated from their homes which they pay themselves.
